Project Newsletter Issue # 1 - April 2022

Editorial

Welcome to the first issue of a newsletter devoted to the project "Romance Languages for Slavic-Speaking University Students", (LMOOC4Slav), funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union Action KA2 Strategic partnership for higher education.

We hope that this issue will help to promote the results, materials and methods to a wider audience and it will encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences as well as a productive collaboration. The newsletter is issued by Federazione Nazionale Insegnanti Centro di iniziativa per l'Europa (FENICE), a teachers' association aimed at contributing to the construction of a common European educational space improving the professional characteristics of teachers and the standards of learning systems.

You can read this newsletter also on www.lmooc4slav.eu or www.fenice-eu.org/. With this newsletter, we look forward to begin and continue a long lasting networking and cooperation activity.

What is LMOOC4Slav Project?

One of the objectives of the EU, which aims to promote mobility and mutual understanding between cultures, is that every European citizen should master two other languages in addition to their mother tongue. In Europe's mosaic of languages, the Slavic and Romance languages belong to the most widely represented groups. In fact, thanks to the Erasmus programme, thousands of Slavic-speaking students decide to undertake part of their studies in Romance speaking countries, such as Italy or Portugal. The LMOOC4Slav project offers to these students a freely accessible online learning path considering their specific needs for studying abroad.

Having a B1/B2 level of competence required for mobility may not be sufficient to successfully complete the course of study and to fully integrate into the academic context. The language of academic communication has its own characteristics and requires particular skills and abilities. The Italian and Portuguese Academic MOOCs will help learners to develop these competences and skills, as well as the strategies that will make them aware of how to acquire new languages and how to learn effectively in the academic context.

In addition to the two MOOCs, the project provides for the creation of open educational resources, dedicated to teachers of LS Italian and Portuguese and to their students. The resources will be downloadable from the project portal www.lmooc4slav.eu and they will include video recordings with transcripts, written texts on academic topics related to different disciplinary fields and "ready to use" Learning Units. The portal, active in three languages (IT, PT and EN), in addition to serving as a repository for educational resources, will offer all the information related to the project, in particular about the two international conferences to be held in Portugal and Italy.

Project Outputs

At the end of its implementation cycle, the project will have produced these outputs:

  1. two Academic Language MOOCs (one for Italian, one for Portuguese);

  2. Open Educational Resources (OERs) for Italian and Portuguese for academic purposes;

  3. a Pedagogical Guide for integrating MOOCs and OERs;

  4. a portal for teaching languages with MOOCs and OERs;

  5. an edited, peer-reviewed volume about LMOOCs

  6. Two international conferences with relative Call for papers, the first in Porto (PT) and the second in Naples (IT)
